Reflection Ask and you shall receive But I haven’t got what I asked for; I’m still sick, out of a job, without a partner, marriage hasn’t got any better, all these things we pray for. And I realise to my pain that God is no magician. So much of life I must accept, so much of life is outside my control. Will a son speak to me again? Will a daughter ever again phone home? Doesn’t that depend on them, not just on God? And still Jesus says, Ask and you shall receive. In the asking is the receiving, in the seeking is the finding, and in the knocking the door opens, for in our prayer God gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask. We are changed by asking. What we get in the asking is his gift. God hears all prayer, responds to all prayers, not always the answer we want or expect. What we receive by asking - maybe a surge of faith, an acceptance of love, a life of hope, in what he gives. In confidence we pray, and in our prayer our hand is held, our anxieties are eased, our fears are lessened, and our confidence is that God always gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Ask and you shall receive. A MINUTE IN EVERY HOUR! AN HOUR IN EVERY DAY!
